Jazz, America's Classical Music, is arguably the greatest cultural
invention produced by the United States. It is enjoyed by listeners
worldwide in bars, clubs, and concert halls. It has endured a century
of turmoil and has overcome the legacy of segregation

Much of Sun Ra's music could be classified as free jazz, especially
his work from the 1960s, although Sun Ra said repeatedly that his music
was written and boasted that what he wrote sounded more free than what "the
freedom boys" played.
Some of Charles Mingus' work was also important in establishing free
jazz. Of particular note are his early Atlantic albums, such as Pithecanthropus
Erectus, The Clown, and Tijuana Moods, in which he employed a compositional
technique of humming tunes to his players and allowing them to feel
their own melodies.
Since the mid-1950s, saxophonist Jackie McLean had been exploring
a concept he called "The Big Room", where the often strict
rules of bebop could be loosened or abandoned at will. Similarly, Cecil
Taylor, the most prominent free jazz pianist, began stretching the
bop boundaries as early as 1956.
The Jimmy Giuffre Trio (with Paul Bley and Steve Swallow) received
little attention during their original incarnation from 1960-62, but
afterwards were regarded as one of the most innovative free jazz ensembles.
Eric Dolphy's work with Charles Mingus, John Coltrane, and Chico Hamilton,
along with his solo work, helped to set the stage for free jazz in
the music community.
In Europe, free jazz first flowered through the experiments of expatriate
Jamaican alto saxophonist Joe Harriott. Beginning in the late 1950s,
he worked on his own distinctive concept of what he termed free form
rather than free jazz, which generally involved a more fluid ensemble
interaction than the American models.
Sun Records
Sun Records has been the name for three 20th century record labels.
The first "Sun Records" were single-sided disc records put out by the Crystalate
Gramophone Record Manufacturing Company Ltd of Kent, England, from about
1905 to 1910. (The same company would later produce records under the
name Imperial).
The second "Sun Records" was produced by the Sun Record Company of Toronto, Canada
in the early 1920s. Many or all of the masters pressed were leased from the USA
based Okeh Records.
The third and most famous "Sun Records" was based in Memphis, Tennessee starting
in the 1950. Founded by Sam Phillips, Sun Records was known for giving notable
musicians such as Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny
Cash their first recording contracts and helping to launch their careers. The
music
of many Sun Records musicians helped lay part of the foundation of modern popular
music and rock and roll and influenced many younger musicians, particularly
the Beatles.
Sam Phillips
Sam Phillips, born Samuel Cornelius Phillips (January 5, 1923 - July
30, 2003), was a record producer and the man responsible for the emergence
of rock and roll as the major form of popular music in the 1950s. He
was born in Florence, Alabama. On January 3, 1950, Sam Phillips opened
the doors at 706 Union Avenue in Memphis, Tennessee of what was to become
arguably the most famous music recording studio in the world, Sun Records.
According to some, notably music historian Peter Guralnick, the first
rock
and roll record was "Rocket 88", by Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats (written
by 19-year-old Ike Turner also the session leader) and recorded by Sam Phillips
for his Sun Record label, in 1951. From 1950 to 1954 Phillips recorded the music
of black rhythm and blues artists such as James Cotton, Rufus Thomas, Rosco(e)
Gordon, and others. His studio was where greats such as B.B. King and Howlin'
Wolf made their first recordings. However, all the while, Sam Phillips kept looking
for a white singer with
that special "sound". Phillips soon changed the face of popular music when he
brought together the diverse elements that created rock and roll and when Elvis
Presley played his version of "That's All Right Mama", a whole new era in music
began. Presley's success would be a drawing card for Sun Records as singing hopefuls
soon arrived from all over the Southern USA. White singers such as Sonny Burgess
("My Bucket's Got A Hole In It"), Charlie Rich and Billy Lee Riley recorded for
Sun with reasonable success while others such as Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash,
Roy Orbison, and Carl Perkins would become superstars. In late 1955, Sam Phillips
studio was in need of money and he had little choice but to accept an offer for
Presley's contract. Atlantic Records tendered $25,000 but the powerful RCA Records
secured Presley's services with an offer of $35,000. On December 4, 1956, Jerry
Lee Lewis was playing piano for a Carl Perkins recording session at Sun Records
studio. While Johnny Cash stood by watching, Elvis walked in and the impromptu
jam session was soon nicknamed
the "Million Dollar Quartet". In 1986 Sam Phillips was part of the first group
inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 1998, he was inducted into the
Blues Hall of Fame, and in October, 2001, he was inducted into the Country Music
Hall of Fame.
Phillips died of respiratory failure on July 30, 2003.
Scotty Moore is a legendary guitarist and member of the Rock and Roll Hall
of Fame. He is best known for playing on many of the most famous Elvis Presley
recordings including "Good Rockin' Tonight", "Baby Let's Play
House", "Mystery Train", "That's All Right", "Hound Dog", "Too Much" and "Jailhouse
Rock". In the 1960s, Moore released a solo album called The Guitar That Changed
the World. Moore's recording debut occurred in 1954, when he recorded a single
for Sun
Records as part of Doug Poindexter & the Starlite Wranglers.
